One of the most common questions we get is: When is the best time to take vitamin D? Morning or night?
The short answer: it doesn’t really matter. There's no scientific evidence that taking vitamin D at a specific time of day is more effective.
That said, there’s been a lot of online chatter and anecdotal feedback around this topic. Some people say they have trouble sleeping when they take vitamin D at night. The theory? Vitamin D is known as the "sunshine vitamin", tied to our circadian rhythm. Since we naturally produce it during the day from sun exposure, it feels more intuitive to take it in the morning.
While it’s true that sun-derived vitamin D aligns with our body’s natural rhythm, research shows that vitamin D supplements behave differently. Your body processes supplemental vitamin D independently of the time it’s taken.
Still, I typically recommend taking your vitamin D in the morning, ideally with breakfast. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin, so it absorbs best with a meal containing healthy fats. Plus, we’re exposed to more immune stressors—like viruses and bacteria—during the day, so it makes sense to give your immune system that support early.
We offer an excellent supplement called Vitamin D Plus. It not only delivers your daily dose of vitamin D3, but also includes magnesium, vitamin B12, and vitamin K2—nutrients that are critical for vitamin D absorption and activation. Without magnesium, vitamin D can remain inactive in the liver, waiting to be converted into its usable form.
Vitamin D Plus is a fantastic immune support formula, especially for Canadians and those living in the northern parts of the US during the winter months when sunlight exposure is low. If you already take a standalone vitamin D supplement, I strongly recommend adding magnesium to support proper activation. Our popular MAG365 BF contains both magnesium and vitamin D and is often taken at night because the magnesium promotes relaxation and better sleep. Despite containing vitamin D, we’ve never had reports of it interfering with sleep.
